Music, movies, and a never-ending staircase

A staircase that seems to go up and up, without ever leading anywhere. M.C. Escher's famous optical illusion Ups and Downs fascinated György Ligeti and inspired him to The Devil’s Staircase.

During this concert, you’ll hear and see that fascination come to life. Young filmmaker Jiyan Düyü is creating a new film especially for HearAndNow to accompany Ligeti’s dizzying piano piece.

But Ligeti didn't just look to Escher. Bach was also an important source of inspiration. The two composers share a fascination with musical structures, polyphony, and patterns that constantly take new directions.

From Bach and Ligeti, the evening ultimately leads to Beethoven and his monumental String Quartet, Op. 131.
