José Nunes

José Nunes (1996) is a Portuguese violist based in Amsterdam. Since August 2023, José has been assistant principal violist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of chief conductor Lahav Shani. José is currently also artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel with Miguel da Silva. In 2020, he completed his master's degree cum laude at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Nobuko Imai and Francien Schatborn. During the same period, he was an academic with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and received a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
In 2022, José was the violist of the ADAM Quartet, which was part of the Dutch String Quartet Academy. He was also a regular guest performer with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and is a member of Orquestra XXI. José is also an alumnus of the European Union Youth Orchestra.
José has participated in numerous festivals such as the Festival Schiermonnikoog, Academia Isola Classica, Davos Festival, Moritzburg Festival, and Santander Festival. He has taken masterclasses with leading professors such as Ettore Causa, Hartmut Rohde, Antoine Tamestit, Veit Hertenstein, and Tatjana Masurenko. As a chamber musician, José has played with and received lessons from various musicians such as the Juilliard Quartet, Christian Poltéra, Mi-Kyung Lee, Frans Helmerson, and Mihaela Martin. José enjoys a scholarship at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel.
